One of the great perks of being a model is the opportunity to travel. During my career I’ve been lucky enough to travel all over the United States and visit dozens of other countries.

If traveling is something you are interested in with your modeling career then you have to have a plan. Here are a few things to consider…

1) It can help to submit to modeling agencies that have international offices. Sometimes an agency may have several offices in different cities all around the world.

2) You might even consider working with a manager to help with making connections in overseas markets.

3) Be sure you are prepared to move if an international agency is interested in you. This means having your current passport and possibly a visa to enter the country.

All of these things require research. You can start by looking into agencies you are interested in that have international offices. Be sure that those agencies also represent your modeling category (plus size, child modeling, fashion, etc.). It is usually easier to get in with a branch from your own country because there are no language barriers, no passport needed, no immigration, and no visas, so it’s less hassle. If the agency from your country takes you on, they may be able to help you get placed in one of their international branches.

Many models find it easier to get signed with international agencies by working with a manager. You do need to spend some time looking for the right manager. A good manager should have a proven track record of successfully placing models with legitimate agencies by using their connections.

You can also submit to international agencies yourself without a manager or without being referred by another agency. To get more information about how to send in submissions to modeling agencies and how to get good representation check out www.americastopmodelingcoach.com where you can get free information on how to help your modeling career.

When you submit to out of town or international agencies keep in mind you will probably have to visit the agency before they will consider signing you. When a trusted manger recommends you to an agent or another affiliated agency gives you a reference, then an agency might accept you based on pictures and that referral. However, even with a reference they still may want to meet you in person.

Being prepared to travel is important. If you leave the country you’ll need a passport. Every professional working model should have a current valid passport. If you wait to apply for one after being offered an international job you might miss out. The process of getting your passport can take weeks, and the job might require you to be there in just a few days. If you can’t go (because of not having a passport) then the client will likely just choose another model. So prepare in advance and get a passport. If you do have a passport and it expires within six months from your date of travel, it will not be valid so be sure to renew your passport at least six month’s before the expiration date. If you are planning on working in certain countries you might require a visa in addition to your passport, so again do your research and be sure you are prepared to go if the opportunity comes up.

Keep in mind if an out-of-town agency wants to sign you, then most likely you’ll have to be willing to move to the city where the agency is located. So being prepared to travel also means being prepared to move. Sometimes if an agency is interested in you they will want you to be local before they sign you.

To make the process of moving from city to city (or country to country) easier there are agencies that have model apartments they rent on a month-by-month basis. Not every agency will help you with finding a place to live, and I’ll admit that the service is usually reserved more for fashion models vs. commercial models. There is no need to worry when an agency doesn’t help with locating housing, because it is not hard to do it for yourself. You can either look for a rental room, check out the newspaper for rooms to rent, or you might be able to find corporate apartments. A corporate apartment is usually a month-to-month or even week-to-week rental. Often times you can find corporate rentals or rooms to rent that are furnished and at reasonable rates.

So, once you’ve done your research, (like looking into agencies, managers, passports, etc.) you’ll be ready to take advantage of the traveling opportunities. Once you get the hang of it you’ll see how you can literally be able to work and travel your way around the world.

Good luck, and safe travels!!

How do I choose an agency? This is a question I get asked all the time. When looking for an agency to represent you there are a few things you need to know:

1) What type of model are you (commercial, fashion, etc.)?

2) What type of modeling you are looking to do?

3) Where do you want to be working as a model?

4) What are your modeling goals? (And remember keep your goal realistic)

The above are some important factors you must consider. I’ll use myself as an example…

1) I’m a Commercial Model.

2) I want to be booked for ads, TV commercial, and for spokesmodel work.

3) I am available nationwide, however I would like to focus my attention in Las Vegas and L.A.

4) My goal when starting out as a model was fashion, travel, and print work. Now my goal is booking national commercials, long term spokesmodel or spokesperson contacts, and only traveling for fun.

So, based on what I am looking for in my modeling career I know I will only submit to agencies that promote commercial models. I don’t want to submit to agencies that focus on fashion. You can find out a lot about an agency by visiting their website. You can see what types of models they are looking for and what type of clients they book talent for.

Once I’ve found an agent I am interested in working with (one that appears to be a good fit for me), I submit pictures and I wait to hear back. If they like me they will ask me in for an appointment. When we meet they will likely ask about my modeling experience, and tell me about what they are looking for in “New Faces”. During the interview I should be able to find out if they book models to do the type of work I am looking for. If they do then I’ll have to hope they are interested enough in me to sign me with their agency. The truth is you don’t always get to pick your agency, usually they pick you.

Now, when you submit to the different agencies you need keep question #3 in mind. Only submit to agencies in areas you want to work in. In my case I look at agencies in Las Vegas and in Los Angeles. I might also look for a few agencies in other cities, or look for some agencies that have offices around the country. I am willing to travel, but now I only do it for very special jobs. The key to where you want to be working is the amount of modeling work to be done there. What I mean is if you want to do fashion work you might be looking to work in New York City. If you live in Duluth, Minnesota and want to stay there then you’ll have a hard time with getting much fashion print and runway work. You need to be where the work is. My Modeling System covers a lot of this information in further detail. You can go to americastopmodelingcoach.com to find more free information on starting a modeling career.

For question #4 (What are your modeling goals), that is a question that may change over time. As your goals change, the way you approach the business of modeling will have to change too. If your goal is to do fashion print and runway in Europe then you need to be looking for agencies that can get you there. Either looking at agencies in Europe (which can be tough for a beginner) or look at an agency in the US with branches overseas. There are lots of agencies that have more than one office. For example Next Agency has offices in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, London, Milan, Paris, and Toronto (possibly in other cities too). Maybe you live in or around Miami and want to model in Europe. So you might want to look for an agency like Next that has an office near you, but also offices in places you’d like to go one day.

Let’s say you’re a model like me. I used to have a goal of fashion work and runway, but my goal has shifted. My “Look” or type is different so my goal and direction have also shifted. When you make a change you might need to change agencies again too. Change is a big part of this industry. Basically you need to look at modeling as a business. For your business to be successful you need to be focused and keep heading in positive directions. Having the “right” agent is an important part of your modeling business.

So to sum it up, you want an agent that books your type, and books for the type of work you are looking to do (or the type of work you can and should be doing). This agent should be in your area or the area you wish to be working. The last thing is that all this work is moving you in the direction you want to be headed.

Once you get out there, I think you’ll catch on pretty quick.

It’s important for a model to keep the pictures in their book or portfolio current. Every time you get new pictures either from test shoots or tear sheets you’ll add them to your book.

You only want to keep current pictures in your book. As a general rule of thumb a current picture is a picture that is less than six months old. So if you have pictures older than six months you might want to look into shooting again soon. You want to keep your book looking fresh. Styles and fashions change every season so even the clothes you’re wearing in some of your pictures can make the pictures look “old”.

Often times your agent will let you know it’s time for new pictures, but remember your agent may have many models they work with and if you are in a busy agency they can’t focus all their attention on you. So, when it comes to updating your book you might have to take some initiative. The way I look at it, if I’m tired of looking at the same old picture chances are my agent and clients as tired of looking at them too. So when it’s time for your book to get a” tune up”, what should you do?

It’s easy, It’s time for a test shoot.

The process of updating your book is never ending. It won’t matter how long you have been modeling, you’ll always be adding and updating your book and the best way to get new shots is a test shoot. When you are new to the industry the best bet is ask your agent for a reference for a few good photographers. After all your agent will want pictures that get you booked, so asking their opinion will get you on the right the path. Your agent knows what kind of pictures will be best for you and what pictures they can use to market you to potential clients.

The most important thing about your pictures is they need to be an accurate representation of how you look. Sometimes you’ll need to update you book more often than just every six months. Anytime you have made a change to your look, it’s time to update your book. So if you cut or color your hair than you’ll need to update your book. If you have gained or lost weight, you’ll also need to update your book. Anything that alters your look, having braces removed, or getting a tattoo, you’ll need an update. For more great modeling tips visit americastopmodelingcoach.com

Your book is one of the most important tools you have for getting booked as a model so you want it to be great. Modeling is a competitive industry and to stay on top you need the best book you can have. So keep it current , and you’ll can keep working.

Organization in your home life will carry over into your work life. I have some great advice for getting organized so you can focus on modeling and not the mess…

I’m starting with shoes! My closet was a disaster, and shoes made up a big part of that problem. Think of getting organized as a Spring cleaning project. Clean up, dust, and get rid of the stuff you don’t use or don’t want anymore while you get yourself organized. I found I had several pairs of shoes that I didn’t wear anymore, but were in good condition so I gave them to a friend. Here are the steps I took to get better organized:

1) Find all of your shoes

2) Match up the pairs

3) Make two categories, ones you want to keep and the ones you want to get rid of (either to donate or sell)

4) Take the shoes you want to keep and create a dedicated location for them. This could be getting a shoe rack; there are closet shoe bags, built in shoe cubby boxes, shoe organizers you put on the back of the door, or you can do what I did. I got a bunch of shoe boxes, I labeled them all with the details of the pair of shoes I was putting in the box, and now the top shelf of my closet is where I store all my shoes. Each box is labeled with the color, size, heel height, a description of the shoe, and of course the designer.

Now I can walk around in my closet and I’m not stepping on or around my shoe collection, and deciding what shoes to wear is as simple as glancing up and pulling down the perfect pair of shoes.

So, the key is simple: find a dedicated place for the shoes. The trick is that you have to remember to put them back in their correct place after you are done using them. This is the real secret to staying organized.

The organization doesn’t have to stop there. Make your life simple by getting everything in the closet organized. Group similar items together, all your shirts in one area together, all your dresses together in their own area. I know for some people space in the closet is extremely limited. So you might sort your clothes into what you wear for the different seasons. Only keep what you will be wearing for the current season in the closet and store the other clothes in boxes under your bed or in some other storage area. For example, in the spring I start pulling out all of my summer clothes (I keep mine under the bed), then pack up all the winter clothes I won’t be needing until the fall. Then when fall rolls around I pull out the winter clothes again and pack up the summer clothes, pretty easy. The only clothes that stay in my closet year round are a few transitional pieces. By putting away the clothes I don’t need right now, (but don’t want to get rid of), it helps me keep my closet more organized and makes it easier to find what I’m looking for.

After all when your are in a hurry to get someplace the last thing you want to be doing is digging around an over-crowded closet trying to find a dress that is now all wrinkled because there wasn’t enough room and it fell to the floor. Or you are searching like crazy for your favorite pair of Jimmy Choo heels and the left shoe is nowhere to be found. Being organized makes life easier.

I hope these tips will help (and check out the pictures of the “before and after” closet make over).

Some of the biggest and most prestigious names in the modeling industry are: Elite, Ford Models, Q Models, Boss Models, Storm, Action Agency, IMG, New York Models, LA Models, Wilhelmina Models, NEXT Models, DNA Models, Trump Models, & Marilyn Agency.

This is a list of the big agencies that have represented top models such as Tyra Banks, Cindy Crawford, Heidi Klum, and Kate Moss. The list isn’t in any particular order (and, I know I listed more then just 10). Many of these agencies have more than one office. Elite for example has over 30 offices worldwide. Next agency has offices in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, London, Paris, and Milan. Although these are top agencies, bigger isn’t always better…

The most important thing is finding the right agency for you. There are many smaller boutique agencies out there that are getting amazing work for their models. So don’t judge the agency by it’s size, they might be small, but if they are busy then their models are working. Another thing is that most of these agencies represent mostly fashion models. So if you happen to be more of a commercial model these agencies might not be right for you.

I’ve worked with agencies both big and small and in my experience the size didn’t matter. If you are going to be successful it’ll be up to you, you are the one who has to put in the work. You have to get out there and pound the pavement, meet clients, attend go-sees, go to callbacks, and fittings, bookings. Keep your pictures current, shoot often, stay in contact with your agent, and keep yourself healthy. Modeling can be fun, but it is still a job.

So when you are out there looking at agencies to submit to I definitely recommend submitting to the “Top” agencies, but remember there are other options too.

The best agency is the one that believes in you, and can get you work.

Feel free to send questions directly to me at info@americastopmodelingcoach.com

Do you think your child could be the next Gerber baby, or maybe the next face on Life cereal boxes? Are there people telling you how beautiful your baby is (even total strangers)? Have you been thinking about child modeling and wonder if it is right for your little one? Here are a few tips to help you make an informed decision…

As a parent of a model or aspiring model here are some questions to consider:

1) Does your child have the right personality or attitude for the business? A good candidate should be a friendly, well behaved, outgoing, happy, polite, and “able to sit still for long periods of time” type of child.

2) Do you have the time to invest in your child’s career? As the parent it’ll be up to you to get your child to auditions, castings, fittings, shoots, and other jobs. Do you have the kind of job that allows you time off to take your child to these types of appointments?

3) Can you afford this career for your child? Modeling itself doesn’t have to be expensive, but we all know time is money. So as I asked in question two, do you have the time? You have to keep in mind you aren’t compensated for your time. Can you afford to be taking off early from work to take your child to an audition or call out “sick” for a day because of an all-day shoot your child has been booked for?

4) Is modeling what your child wants to do? As a parent you want what is best for your child. So be sure you are pursuing modeling for your child because your child wants to do it. Give them the chance to experience it. and if they like it and have fun that’s great! If they don’t really take to it, that is alright too, modeling isn’t for everyone. So check in every now and then with your child and see how they feel about modeling and if they still want to do it.

Alright, if you’ve answered yes to those questions above then the next step is finding good legitimate representation for your child. The process of finding an agent is the same for a child model as it is for any other kind of model. You have to send in submissions or if possible attend an open call. This process is covered at length in my book, but here is a quick overview.

1) Do your research: look up agencies in your area or you can find a free state by state directory at www.americastopmodelingcoach.com. Check the agencies out, see what you can find out about them online and with the BBB. Things to check for: complaints against the agency, how long they have been in business, what kind of models they represent (not all agencies represent child models), and who their clients are.

2) Put together a submission packet: Once you’ve done your research you’ll likely find a few agencies that interest you. Be sure you are sending your submissions to agencies that have a children’s division. Your submissions should include current pictures of your child, these pictures don’t have to be professional pictures, sending in snapshots you took yourself is fine. These should be happy smiling pictures (agents don’t want kids shots to look pouty or moody), you want to these pictures to express a happy, fun, outgoing child. Be sure they are dressed in something cute, clean, and free of stains and holes. DO NOT send swimsuit shots of your child. You’ll want to write on the back of the pictures your child’s name, date of birth, age, current sizes and your name and phone number too. You’ll also want to send a contact sheet, again include the child’s name, age, DOB, sizes, along with contact information like your name as the parent, phone numbers, and address. Then mail the submission packet in. Some agencies do online submissions and in that case you’ll most likely fill out an online form and upload a few pictures. In the process of researching the agencies you should be able to find what method the agency prefers to handle new submissions.

3) Once you’ve heard back from some or all of the agencies you have submitted to it’ll be time to meet the agent. Most agencies are busy places so you’ll be scheduled and appoint to meet them or the agency may have an “open call” day and suggest you come on that day. Either way you and your child want to show up at the agency looking fresh, and with a good attitude. Don’t forget to bring your snapshots with you again.

4) If all goes well, the agency will sign your child and we hope to see them in print soon. If the agency doesn’t sign your child that’s OK too. There is more than one agency out there so you go to the next. Rejection is part of the business, you’ll have to be persistent.

Now I have a few warnings and things to look out for:

1) Look out for agencies looking to collect fees up front, as legitimate agencies DO NOT collect up front fees.

2) Stay away from anyone asking you to send in swimsuit pictures of a child. This is dangerous. There are and has been trouble with so-called agencies selling pictures of children in swimwear to third parties for unscrupulous activity. So DO NOT send swimwear pictures of children!

3) Watch out for agencies that Over Promise. There are companies out there that make big promises for fame, but the catch is they’ll say you need to take their modeling classes, and they’ll have to build your child a professional portfolio before anything can really get started. Watch out! I’ve had numerous coaching students call me (or parents of child models) after being taken in by these scam agencies. They had spent thousands of dollars on classes and worthless portfolios, then the “agency” never booked them on a single job.

All of this and so much more is covered in my book “The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to Modeling”. You can find it at www.americastopmodelingcoach.com or www.modelingadvice.org and it is also available at Amazon.com here

Hundreds of photographers from around the country were in town attending an annual wedding photographers convention called WPPI. One of these photographers organized this charity event where for a small fee attendees from the convention could shoot professional models, in designer gowns and tuxedos, out in a private country club setting. All of the proceeds were then donated to the charity to help out families in need. The shoot was a success and a lot of fun. There were dozens of photographers that turned out for the shoot. The location for the shoot was the Las Vegas Country Club. The dress I was wearing is a Vera Wang wedding gown that was on loan from one of the bridal boutiques in town (retail on that gown $8000.00). There were 8 models all together, they paired us up into “couples”, this was a wedding theme shoot after all. Then it was time to get into make up. They had a team of professional hair stylists and make up artists on set to turn us into beautiful blushing brides and grooms.

We had all donated our time for the event, and by the end of the day we were beat, but ended up with so many amazing pictures and happy memories. This was a great opportunity to do something that gives back to the community. I’ve included a few more great shots from that shoot.

The job itself was for only 2 hours, so technically I spent more time getting into make up for the job than actually working the job. The only challenge left is getting all the paint off when you get home.

Short special event jobs like this one are fun, easy, and they pay great. You can usually make at least $100 an hour. I have included a few more pictures from this job. Enjoy!

There are several different kinds of modeling scams out there. It appears that more and more criminals are using the internet to search for victims. In a recent scam the criminal put a posting up on a popular modeling industry website. The posting invited models to attend a “Model Search” and “Free Test Shoot”. The models who responded to the posting (via email) were given a date, time, and location for this model search / test shoot.

As it turned out, the location was a hotel room… (as an aside, be careful about meeting new people, especially meeting a complete stranger in a hotel room! You could be putting yourself in grave danger).

In this particular situation, the criminal wanted money from the victim and fortunately, no one was physically harmed.

Here is how the scam played out:
The model showed up at the hotel, and there was both a “photographer” and an assistant. They did a short, quick photo shoot and they told the model that she looked great, they got some amazing shots, and that they loved her look so much that they wanted to pay her for the shoot and to re-book her again for a future job in Miami.

This sounds good…too good.

What they did was pay the model with a $5000.00 cashier’s check, and then explained that they needed the model to pay them a ten percent commission back to them on her earnings. So she took the $5000.00 cashier’s check, and wrote them a personal check for $500.00 (I am sure you see where this is going).

She was thinking “Wow, I just made $4500.00 for a test shoot” and she was convinced that they were going to book her for another shoot in a few weeks where she was promised the same pay.

So after depositing the cashier’s check, she tells everyone about this great booking. Over the next week or so she gets a few more emails with vague details about the upcoming “Miami job” from the criminals. Before long, the bank calls to let her know that the cashier’s check was a forgery and that the funds have been pulled from her account. She emails the photographer (there is no phone number, all they gave was an email account) explaining the situation, and of course receives no reply. She emails again, still no reply. The final email bounces back with an “email account deleted” message.

So now the model is left with a worthless cashier’s check, the $500.00 she paid as a commission is gone, and she gets charged a bounced check fee from her bank. She also was liable for overdraft charges from spending some of the “earnings” from the test shoot.

She was lucky she only lost her money because as I said, there are huge safety risks going to a stranger’s hotel room. Models have been attacked, mugged, raped, kidnapped, and even killed. Always use common sense – bring an escort, let people know where you are, who you are with, and when you will be home. You are better safe than sorry.

HOW TO AVOID BEING A VICTIM OF A MONEY SCAM LIKE THIS

1. Payment by Cashier’s Check is not usual and is suspect. In most cases you should be paid by company check, and ideally, you should be working and getting paid through your agency, so this type of situation should never come up (the internet can be a dangerous place).

HOT TIP: These cashier’s checks can look and feel real – in fact, most of these forgeries will fool a bank. By the time the bank figures it out your money is long gone. BEWARE OF CASHIER’S CHECKS!

2. If someone wants to pay you with any kind of check and demands a commission immediately from your own funds, do not do it! Any and all commissions due should have already been deducted from the models final payment. I have been modeling since I was a child and I have never had to write a check to an agent or any other third party. All of the fees have always been taken out of my checks in advance.

3. By definition, a “Test Shoot” is a collaboration between the model and the photographer. It is unheard of for a model to be paid $5000.00 for a test shoot! Usually a paid job would have a specific client and contract where the purpose of the shoot and the use of the pictures is clearly defined. This is covered in more detail in my book.

THE BIG PICTURE

This was an online contact, with no phone number, just an email address. The meeting is not at a studio, or an office, but at a random hotel room. They want to pay with a cashier’s check and demand a fee. Even the amount of money ($5000.00) is suspicious. After all, that is a lot of money for an “informal” photo shoot in a hotel room when it is only supposed to be a test shoot. When you put it all together, it just does not add up.

The criminal preys on the desire for fame, money, and future bookings to pull this off. They are excellent at telling you what you want to hear, and more importantly, what you want to believe.

Recognizing the signs will keep you from becoming a victim. For more information on how to have a LEGITIMATE career in modeling, please visit www.AmericasTopModelingCoach.com.

Sometimes a little knowledge can be dangerous. New models are so excited to get started they fall into traps that cost them a lot of money. Trap number one…

1) Enrolling In A Modeling School

For someone who doesn’t know any better, going to modeling school might sound like a great idea. The truth is that it can be an expensive and unnecessary step toward becoming a model. Most of the big agencies prefer working with models that haven’t gone to modeling school. The reason is simply because (in most cases) the instructors at modeling schools have little or no experience in the real modeling world. So what the beginning model ends up learning is the wrong way to do things, so by the time the model signs with a real agency, the agent has to un-teach all the bad habits they have been taught. Most models get their real “training” with on the job experience at photo shoots, working runway shows, attending go-sees, and more.

Most modeling schools are not only a waste of time, but also a waste of money charging the student hundreds or thousands of dollars in fees. What many new models don’t realize is that a modeling school is not the same as a modeling agency. A modeling agency earns money by making a commission off of work they find for a model. So an agency makes money when the model makes money. A modeling school makes money by charging the model for things like classes, enrollment fees, and overpriced portfolios. Modeling schools don’t generally book models for work because the school doesn’t need to make a commission as the student is already paying them.

There are always exceptions to the rule. If you are reading this and still want to join a modeling school be sure and do your research. Ask yourself a few questions…

•	What is the modeling experience or training of the instructor teaching the classes?

•	Are they teaching techniques and skills that are valuable?

•	What do I hope to achieve from the experience?

I suggest saving both the time and the money you would otherwise spend. As I said, real agencies don’t care about the modeling school “diploma”. You’ll be able to learn everything you need to know with real job experience, advice from your agent, and by just doing your own research. Oh, and that expensive modeling portfolio the school said you needed? It might be as much of a waste as the classes are.

2) Overpaying For Portfolio And Pictures

It is true that professional models have a portfolio, sometimes referred to as a “book”. What a lot of new models don’t know is that they don’t always need a portfolio in order to find a good agent. The fact is they can be picked up or signed to a major agency with a few simple snapshots. If you don’t believe me check for yourself, look at the websites for Ford or Wilhelmina, and read the section for submitting as a new model; both sites will tell you to send in snapshots. They even show you examples of submitted snapshots so you’ll know exactly what they want.

This is not to say that you can’t submit professional pictures, of course you can! The challenge is that new models have been convinced they needed these expensive portfolios put together before they can really get an agent (and just it isn’t true). I’ve heard of models paying thousands of dollars to have a portfolio put together, when all they needed were a few snapshots. Think about it, a few snapshots will cost about ten dollars.

Now your snapshots can get you an agent, but once you’ve got yourself an agent, that is when you will need professional pictures. Your agent will sit down with you and let you know what they’d like to see in your book. If you already have a portfolio they may or may not like those pictures, so you might have to start all over again. Only this time it isn’t going to cost you thousands of dollars for new shots. A test shoot with a professional photographer shouldn’t run more than a couple of hundred dollars. Your agent will have plenty of good photographers to recommend.

There can be a few exceptions with this bit of advice. There are agencies that will expect you to already have professional pictures, however they also usually expect that you have real working experience too. So if you’re brand-new, then truthfully you don’t have either one, you’ve got no experience and no portfolio. So those types of agencies might not be the best for you.

If you still decide you’d like to build you own portfolio, then once again, make sure you do some research first. Check out the photographer, do some price comparisons, and ask for references. You don’t want to get ripped off.

The best advice is don’t pay for a portfolio or professional pictures until after you have an agent. Most of the time you can get your foot in the door at the agency with a few snapshots and then let them direct you what to do. So try that approach before making a big investment in professional pictures. Again this will save you time, money, and heartache.

3) Spending Money To Attend Modeling Conventions And Searches

There are modeling contests, model searches, and modeling conventions popping up all over the country that advertise for aspiring models to “come and be discovered”. Usually these types of events have some kind of fee the model will have to pay just to attend, and sometimes they get very expensive. I’ve seen sign-up forms charging models two thousand eight hundred and fifty dollars and more to enroll!

Should you decide to participate in one, do your research. Not all of them are scams, but you have to be very careful. Make sure the contest or convention is being sponsored by a legitimate agency, and always check to see about hidden fees. When contests, searches, or conventions are being sponsored by legitimate agencies they can be excellent learning opportunities, but they can also be very expensive.

Before you pay to attend a modeling convention, model search or contest, once again, think about what you really hope to gain.

•	If you are going to pay because you think it might be fun, then go have fun, but there are probably much better ways to spend your money.

•	If you are paying for the chance to learn more about the industry, there are much less expensive ways to get legitimate contacts and information about modeling.

•	If you are spending your money in the hope that you will find and agency to sign you: you may find one (and they may be a great agency) but why not skip the model convention and avoid paying the fees by going directly to the agency on your own?

At events like those I mentioned above, you are only one person out of dozens or even hundreds of hopeful models. There isn’t time for you to get quality one-on-one attention at these events. You can skip the big price tag and still get tons of valuable information by doing some research on your own. Or, spend your dollars wisely by hiring a professional personal coach to guide you through the process and hold you accountable. Think of a coach as a “personal trainer” for your career. There are very few who actually know the modeling industry, so again, be careful whom you choose. Do an internet search for modeling coach and see what comes up.
